This is an essential piece of tank kit, as bacteria build up in the sponge and break down the debris that is pulled through the filter, releasing clean water back into the tank. The filter has to be the right size for the size of your tank and also needs to be powerful enough to cope with the number of fish the tank contains. The larger the number of fish the stronger the filter needs to be to remove the decaying fish food, fish waste etc.
