Most babies are able to hear clearly from birth and acquire large amounts of information from listening to sounds all around them.
Although babies’ ears are well-developed at birth, it may take up to six months before they are able to hear fully and understand the sounds around them.
This is because:
- At birth, baby’s ears are still full of fluid, which may take time to clear.
- Secondly, parts of a baby’s brain which deal with hearing are still developing.
It is for this reason parents should stimulate their babies hearing with gentle new sounds to support their hearing development. Here are some ideas below:
Play soft music
- Shake a rattle nearby to see if baby turns to where the sound is coming from
- Sing to baby
- Talk to baby – let them see how your mouth moves
