Although the answer to ‘How much do childminders make?’ is highly subjective and very much dependent on: how many children an individual is allowed to look after; as well as how much they charge; which part of the country they live in and how many hours they work, as a ballpark figure, they can earn between £3.50 – £6 per hour, £35-£55 a day working up to 12 hours a day, or as a general rule between £8,000-£28,000 a year.
As can be seen, this is not a ‘get rich quick’ scheme.
Earnings can fluctuate dramatically from week to week as parents’ lives are affected. They could lose their jobs and become unable to afford childcare; fall pregnant and decide to stay at home with their child or simply decide they need to start saving money, because of a new baby.
This makes the business very precarious and full of uncertainty.
While school holidays often provide an influx of enquiries, these also cannot be relied upon as parents can easily decide to take their children away on holiday at a moment’s notice too.
However, of those who do become registered childminders, many do childminding as a means of supplementing their income between jobs or if their partner is the main bread winner. It is especially popular with those who decide to take time out from their regular jobs, as a result of starting a new family, giving them the opportunity to spend more time with their own children, as they work.
For this reason, if money is your primary motivator, you would probably be better off looking at another low cost business idea, with better returns.
