It is important to choose the right staff for your business, this goes without saying. However, when dealing with children, because the key persons in the children’s lives will have a significant impact, the choice you make will be even more important.
If you employ a manager to over-see the day to day running of the nursery and its resources, they should be qualified to NVQ level 3 in childcare and have appropriate experience in a day-care setting. You may also want them to have upto 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
All other staff will need to be suitably qualified to provide care to young children. At least half should have at least level 2 qualifications. Other staff should also hold childcare qualifications (including NVQ, BTEC and Cache qualifications), in addition they should have patience and the characteristics to care for children and the discipline to make the nursery work.
Any staff you employ will also have to undergo a DBS check and must have health and safety training, as well as child protection and safeguarding induction within their first week of employment.
