The humble spud in its dreary brown skin, covering its plain white flesh doesn’t look like it can be used for much, but is surprisingly one of the most versatile foods in the carbs family.
From your chunky chips to French fries, it can also be boiled, mashed, roasted, sautéed, fried, baked and even added to a whole host of other dishes as an accompaniment or an ingredient.
So if you want to pack in the carbs try using potatoes in the following ways:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Roast potatoes
  • Chips and fries
  • Baked potatoes
  • Added to stews
  • Spanish omelettes
  • Boiled potatoes on their own or added in a curry etc.
  • Potato bakes
  • As a topping e.g. Shepherd’s pie
  • Croquettes
  • Added to other ingredients to make: Fish cakes, fish pie, meat pies etc.
  • Potato wedges
  • Fritters fried in batter
  • Added in samosas / pakoras / cheesy bites
  • Potato salad
  • Thinly slice and fry and make your own crisps

And don’t forget there are the different varieties of potatoes too, which give different flavours and textures, from your King Edwards to your Maris Peers, Maris Pipers, to your new potatoes to sweet potatoes.
