Changes to your circumstances that HMRC need to know

Things in life change regularly – some are important to HMRC others not.

Here are a few of the changes you need to inform HMRC about.

  1. If you stop working as a childminder

This may mean that you are no-longer self-employed, in which case may not need to pay your class 2 National insurance contributions, but will need still need to fill in the final years tax return that you were self-employed.

If you stop working as a childminder but are still self-employed then you need to let HMRC know about your change of business.

  1. If you change your name

If you get married or change your name through deed poll, then you will also need to let HMRC know so that they can amend their records.

  1. If you change address

You may remain in the same locality, but move to a bigger property in which case HMRC need to know about this change so that they can also update their records.

  1. If you take on Staff

If you decide to care for more children, you will need additional support in the form of part-time or full-time staff. This means your status will change from simply a childminder to an Employer.

Therefore, you will need to register as an employer and also let HMRC know who your staff are.

Special rules apply to employers as they will need to pay their staff PAYE and at least the minimum wage (this usually changes every 1st October), and varies depending on the age of your employee, or the national living wage from April 2016.

You will also have to check that their staff are legally allowed to work in the UK and carry out DBS checks and also pay statutory Sick or Maternity pay.

Remember that employee costs such as wages, National Insurance etc. are all allowable expenses which you can claim back.
