Developing Literacy – Reading & Writing

Literacy is the ability to read and write and use written information. In order to write it helps understand reading and know words and pictures represent things in life. For this reason literacy combines both reading and writing.

It includes:

• Phonics – the awareness of letter sounds are and how they come together to make words). The ability to rhyme, segment words into syllables and single sounds, blend sounds together, identify sounds in different positions in words.
• Reading – the ability to decode written information and understand the meaning of the words and read fluently).
• Spelling  –  arrange letters in the correct order to make words
• Writing – handwrite, type, spelling, grammar and story plan.

 

Here are some ideas to support their development:

Developing Reading

• Teach children the common 100 keywords that cannot easily be sounded out using phonics, such as ‘the, is, play’ etc.
• Read stories to them
• Talk about pictures
• Teach them the phonetic sounds

Developing Writing

• Give children a variety of tools to use:
• Crayons
• Pencils
• Paints
• Sand to draw in using finger
• Chalk on paving stones
• Thick felt tips
