Sandwiches don’t have to be boring – experiment with different types of bread.
Use burger buns, baguettes, sesame buns, or other seeded varieties, bagels, even croisants to turn a plain boring sandwich into a nutritional feast.
If a whole sandwich is too much for your little person, cut them into halves, quarters or even at a slant to change the shape and size, to make them more attractive and manageable to eat.
Then, experiment with different fillings too. Serve them hot or cold.
With so many nutritional fillings to choose from, why not let the children choose their own and even create their sandwiches themselves.
- Meat – use cooked meats either wafer thin or diced, from chicken, turkey, cold meat and sausage, added to salad and sauce of choice. Or even veggie saugages and veggie burgers.
- Fish – use a fish paste and cucumber, tuna flakes, sweetcorn and mayo, or sardines in tomato sauce with lettuce.
- Non meat fillings – use egg salad, cheese and pickle, cheese and apple, cheese and mayo, grated carrot, cheese and mayo, cheese and coleslaw, fried egg and ketchup in a bagel.
- Sweet snacks – Fruit jam/spread, nut free chocolate spread, lemon curd
- Toasties/grilled bread – cheese and tomato, other fillings you like with melted cheese – burgers etc.
