Unlike primary schools, which are about preparing children for their academic and independent lives ahead, nursery schools are about preparing children for life. This means activities focus around developing the child physically to dress and feed themselves, go to the toilet by themselves, communicate their needs and also beginning to learn their letters, start to write, count and draw.
In England most nurseries follow the EYFS which is made up of the seven areas of development:
- Personal, Social, Emotional Development (PSED)
- Communication and Language (CL)
- Physical Development (PD)
- Maths (M)
- Literacy (L)
- Understanding the World (UW)
- Arts and Creative development (AC)
You will also have to be registered with a governmental body such as Ofsted, depending on the part of the country you are operating in, to ensure you meet all their childcare rules and regulations.
Before applying for Ofsted registration, you must first have a health check and also have a DBS (Disclosure, Barring Service) check, formally known as the CRB check, to ensure you have no criminal convictions and are suitable to work with children.
