Sight Development

Babies’ eyes like their other senses allow them to take in large amounts of information for their brains to process. Their eyesight also helps to develop their hand-eye co-ordination and other skills.

They can see from birth, but their vision is quite blurry and they only start to focus on their parents face while they are being fed at about 30cm away. Then their sight gradually starts to develop over their first year. They are able to see as well as an adult by the time they are a year old.

At first they can only focus on black and white objects clearly, but by two months, coloured objects become clearer to them.

By four months they start to realise things are at a distance and from 5 months start to inspect objects in their hands in detail.

By 8- 9 months they can see at a distance a little better, but by 12 months they are able to recognize familiar faces approaching them.

Here are some ideas below to support their development:

  • Let them see black and white pictures
  • Give them colourful moving toys to watch
  • Give them toys that light up
  • Let them watch lava lamps
  • Encourage them to follow the light from a torch in the dark
