What are the Early Years Outcomes (EYOs)

The Early Years Outcomes formerly called Development Matters (DMs) are the Prime and Specific Development statements documented in the Early Years Framework.

The Prime Areas being:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Communication and language (CL)
  • Physical Development (PD)

The Specific Areas being:

  • Literacy (L)
  • Maths (M)
  • Understanding the World (UW)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

The Prime areas refer to all ages from birth to 5, and broken up into different age bands, while the Specific areas apply more to children over 18 months old and broken up into age bands for the older children.

Under each of these main areas are also the sub-categories or aspects these are as follows:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)

  • Self – confidence & Self Awareness
  • Managing Feelings and Behaviour
  • Making Relationships

Communication and language (CL)

  • Listening and Attention
  • Understanding
  • Speaking

Physical Development (PD)

  • Moving and Handling
  • Health and Self care

Literacy (L)

  • Reading
  • Writing

Maths (M)

  • Numbers
  • Shape and Space and Measure

Understanding the World (UW)

  • People and communities
  • The world
  • Technology

Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

  • Exploring and Using Media and Materials
  • Being Imaginative

Then finally under each aspect there are the Early Years Outcomes, which are the statements or evidence which shows what children can do.

These outcomes are used as a guide to help practitioners ensure children are progressing and developing as they should.
